Our Top Toy Picks for Larger, Stronger Dogs

They say the bigger the better, and for some dog owners, that’s certainly true. From Labradors to German Shepherds, bigger dogs have a whole lot of love to give and there’s no denying that they are a joy to spend time with.

But if you own a bigger, stronger dog, finding toys that are tough enough to withstand play from stronger jaws and stronger paws can be a worry.

Luckily, at Tug-E-Nuff Dog Gear, we specialise in making strong and durable yet incredibly enticing motivational training aids. We’ve previously written about our top toy picks for smaller dogs so it was only fair we do the same for larger dogs…

Here are a few of our favourites.

1. Sheepskin Bungee Chaser With Tennis Ball

Since we created this toy, made with sustainably sourced real sheepskin, it’s fast become a Tug-E-Nuff Classic. Bigger dogs can’t resist the smell and texture of the sheepskin, and the added bonus of a tennis ball takes its motivational power to the next level. The bungee is made from climbing-grade webbing so you can play safely in the knowledge that it can withstand even the toughest tugging from the most enthusiastic larger dog. It’s great for both throwing and playing tug and guarantees hours of fun.

 2. Crazy Thing Bungee Tug

We designed the Crazy Thing with colourful strands of soft fleece that cleverly mimic the feathers of a bird, sparking the interest of even the most reluctant dogs and offering them an extremely satisfying bite area. The movement of this toy makes it perfect for motivating dogs during training and doubles up as the perfect reward. The bungee handle gives you excellent grip and provides outstanding durability. Available in a choice of bright colours, we don’t know who will love it more – you or your dog!

3. Sheepskin Bungee Ring

If you like getting out and about with your bigger breed of dog, but you don’t want to miss out on training opportunities, our Sheepskin Bungee Ring is perfect. It fits nicely in your pocket so that you can always be ready to reward good behaviour and take advantage of chances to put in some training practice when you’re not at home. It packs the same punch as our bigger toys made with Sheepskin, but it just takes up less space. Its clever design makes it ideal for throwing and playing tug (don’t worry – it might be smaller, but it’s just as durable as our other toys – we promise!).

4. Bungee Food Bag With Rubber Ball

Calling all food-motivated bigger dogs! This is the toy you’ve been dreaming about! If your dog struggles to be motivated by other toys, just wait until you see them with this. Stash a few treats in the handy pouch, throw and watch as your dog chases after it with new-found enthusiasm. The addition of a textured rubber ball, made with non-toxic materials, makes it extra enticing and satisfying for them to retrieve. We’ve seen some amazing results with this toy from dogs who previously struggled to find their training mojo.

5. Rabbit Skin Bungee Tug

Sometimes during training, you need a super high-value reward up your sleeve – and our Rabbit Skin Bungee Tug is it! The texture and scent of the real, ethically-sourced rabbit skin that taps into the hunting instinct of bigger dogs and gets them feeling fired up and ready to play. Like all our tug toys, this one is built to last with a dual-strand bungee handle, which provides excellent grip while reducing the risk of jarring your dog's neck or your shoulder. It’s time to have some fun!

This is just a small selection of the training toys we make which are ideal for larger, stronger dogs. To see the full range, click here.

Hi Barbara! Recall is a very common issue in dogs of that age as they find lots of distractions much more rewarding than returning to us. I would firstly try a long line so he can’t rehearse that unwanted behaviour and think about an exciting reward for him. For most dogs a small treat isn’t enough when outside the house so a fun game of tug is much more enticing. Perhaps check out our Sheepskin Chaser tugs – these are great for recall! I would also recommend to only use the toy for interactive play and training as this helps to build value into the reward :-)

I have a 11 month labrador pup, he is very good generally out and about but the odd occasion when we meet another dog he won’t come back with his usual recall any suggestions please. I have been looking at your tug e nuff toys. He is a chewer if his toys but loves to cuddle them too. Any advise would be great thank you
